Moves to improve safety at dangerous Kildare bridge
Farmers and hauliers encounter difficulty when facing oncoming traffic
MEASURES are on the way to improve safety at a bridge at an historic location in Kildare.
At the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District, Cllr Mark Leigh brought forward a motion requesting that “the council implements traffic calming measures at Kilkea Bridge due to its narrow, historic structure and repeated collisions/ bridge strikes.”
Cllr Veralouise Behan and Cathaoirleach Ivan Keatley expressed their support for the motion at the meeting.
A report issued by Daragh Conlon, acting senior engineer in the projects team at Kildare County Council, stated: “The Bridge Remediation Team are happy to meet onsite with the elected member to review this case and determine the most appropriate next steps in this case.”
Cllr Leigh said the issue had “become a matter of genuine concern to the community”, mentioning a petition signed by 200 local residents. He noted that farmers and hauliers encounter difficulty when facing oncoming traffic.
Cllr Leigh welcomed the engineer’s willingness to meet on-site.
Cllr Behan suggested that they discuss the matter with the gardaí, with the aim of having a speed van implemented.
