A local rep is looking for a pilot project to address congestion in the Kildare town

There has yet to be any progress on a pilot project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in a busy part of Athy, with a meeting first agreed five months ago yet to take place.

At March’s meeting of Athy Municipal District (MD), cllr Brian Dooley asked if Kildare County Council could provide an update on a request he made last year to allow a pilot project for traffic to run from the Carlow Road side of Athy to the Stanhope Street side, which leads onto the Monasterevin road on the northern side of the town.

Cllr Dooley brought the potential measure up last October as a way to ease congestion in the busy part of town, which has experienced extra footfall since the opening of the Shackleton Experience in October.

Currently, there is a one-way system with traffic able to run from the Stanhope Street side to the Carlow road side through the east side of Emily Square.

Acting senior engineer in the projects team at Kildare County Council Daragh Conlan agreed at that stage back in October to meet with cllr Dooley and the other elected members of Athy MD.

Five months on, Mr. Conlan’s response to cllr Dooley’s request for an update was the following:

“The previously provided report committed to meeting with the Elected Members to discuss the feasibility of a pilot project. This meeting can be arranged to progress this issue.”
