AN appeal for an interactive speed control sign for the Sallins Road in Naas has been turned down by an engineer for the Transport Section.
At the September meeting of the Naas Municipal District which was held last week (10 September), cllr Anne Breen made this particular plea “that the council provides interactive speed control signs on the Sallins Road, Naas in the interests of road safety”.
However, she was to be disappointed by the formal reply given to her by Senior Engineer Donal Hodgins.
'The existing speed limit signage on the R407 Sallins Road is clearly displayed,' he began.
'The limit is 60kph at the northern (Monread Road) end, and reduces to 50kph closer to the town.
'This road is a regional route that is located within the built-up area of Naas town.
'Interactive speed control signage is used at specific locations and situations.
'The link between the provision of signage and a potential improvement in road safety on all regional roads into Naas - and other, similar sized towns - has not been demonstrated.'
He concluded: “It should also be noted that there is no funding provision or ongoing maintenance for such signage."
