THE FAST growing sporting craze currently sweeping the country looks may get its first purpose-built facility in Naas after a local developer applied to build nine padel courts beside the GAA club off the Sallins Road.

Straffan-based Springwood Ltd made an application recently to build three buildings on the site.

The first is a two-storey recreation hall (709sqm) for yoga, pilates, and dance classes, with changing facilities and a sauna.

Beside it will be a single-storey prefab with five double padel courts, with a total area of 1,554sqm.

The second padel building will also be single storey (1,021sqm) with two double, and two single courts.

The application is seeking a new vehicular entrance off the existing road that serves Scoil Bhride and Naas GAA, to serve 67 car parking, and 60 bike parking spaces.

The entire proposed campus will also develop a new recreational public space of 2,313sqm at this location called Oldtown Demesne, and is being designed by O’Flynn Architects from Eyre Street in Newbridge.

Springwood have previously developed The Orchard estate, nearby on the Sallins Road.

They are also responsible for Mill Harbour on the Grand Canal in Sallins, a development of A-rated, energy efficient housing.

The game itself is a racquet sport that combines both tennis and squash, usually played in doubles on an enclosed court with glass and mesh walls as part of the game, with a non-stringed, solid paddle.

The game was invented in Mexico in 1968 and now has more than 25 million players in 90 countries.

A decision on the Naas development is due before the end of August.
