MEASURES have been sought to facilitate wheelchair users in crossing a busy Kildare road.

At the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District, cllr Fintan Brett motioned “that the council prioritises the provision of a low-cost crossing on Main Street, Kill close to the junction with Hartwell Road”.

He added that the crossing would be aimed at facilitating children and wheelchair users crossing the road, which is “very busy” due to the amount of vehicles that use the route to avoid the N7.

The motion was seconded by cllr Anne Breen.

The council’s response - issued by senior executive officer for transport, mobility and open spaces Mark McLoughlin – said that a member of the council’s technical staff will contact cllr Brett “to investigate the location of the requested low-cost crossing”.

Cllr Brett said that the response was “good to hear”. He noted that the road is “absolutely chock-a-block” in the mornings and had been particularly busy during the previous week of fuel protests.

He explained how the crossing would make a particularly big difference for wheelchair users, stating that there is already a ramp close to the village centre which people can use to come off the footpath on to the road, and so it would be “absolutely suitable” if markings were put on the ramp and if signs were put up.

Cllr Brett added that “a small amount of money would solve a big problem”.
