A PLANNING application has been submitted for a multi-unit residential development at 23 Duke Street, Athy.

Hardware store, Griffin Hawe Limited, is seeking permission for an extensive change of use and redevelopment of the existing property to provide four new homes in the town, including a one-bedroom apartment, three-bedroom apartment, and two two-bedroom duplex apartments.

The proposal includes converting the existing ground-floor front shop into part of a residential dwelling, along with the demolition of a rear shed and the conversion of a shed and outhouse at the back of the property into additional residential accommodation.

Plans also provide for the conversion of the ground floor of the building and part of the rear into a one-bedroom apartment.

The upper two floors of the street-front building, together with part of the first-floor rear return, would be converted into a three-bedroom unit.

In addition, the remaining section of the rear return at ground and first-floor level would be converted and extended to create two two-bedroom duplex apartments.

The development would include all associated site works.

Submissions on the proposed development should be made by 23 March. The decision will be made by Kildare County Council on the fate of the development on 14 April, 2026.
