A SUM of €15,000 of unspent Local Property Tax (LPT) has been allocated to residents associations in the Athy Municipal District.

The councillors of the Athy Municipal District met on Tuesday to discuss the reallocation of unspent LPT from 2024 and 2025. There was €17,889 available overall to be reallocated - €5,889 from 2024 and €12,000 from last year.

Cathaoirleach Ivan Keatley proposed that €15,000 be allocated to resident’s associations, €1,000 to the Castledermot Amenity Group, €944 to Radio Castledermot and €944 to the Narraghmore-based active retirement group “Larries on the Move”.

Cllr Aoife Breslin seconded the figures, with councillors collectively agreeing on this allocation.

In an unusual occurrence, all five councillors – cathoirleach Keatley and cllr Breslin as well as cllrs Mark Leigh, Veralouise Behan and Brian Dooley – attended the meeting virtually.

Speaking to the Kildare Nationalis t, cllr Breslin encouraged groups and organisations looking for council funding to apply early, with the local representative noting that there has recently been an issue with some organisations applying late.

“As councillors, we need to get the message out that like when you're trying to apply for funding, it's really November, December, you know, and just make people aware of that. Because once the money's allocated, there's very little, you know, remains unspent that we can give out further in the year.”

The Labour Party councillor further explained that the aforementioned €15,000 allocation will go to several residents associations in the municipal district.

“There's a resident’s associations grant that opens, I think it opens in February every year. And associations that make an application to the community section (of the council) … it’s those ones we're going to top up”.
