Report of indecent exposure in Kildare may have been call of nature

Church Lane, Naas

A PANIC that began on Wednesday on a popular Kildare Facebook group alleging public masturbation is “highly unlikely” to have happened, according to local sources, whilst a garda spokesperson “can currently find no incidents matching the description you have described”.

The incident is alleged to have happened on Wednesday (13 August) on Church Lane just off Naas's Main Street at around 5.20pm, when an individual on the way home from work who “came across a man indecently exposed and touching himself while recording himself.”

This witness said they had “called the guards”, however, the garda press office spokesperson said she “searched our systems” and could not find any report of the incident.

A local garda also debunked the rumour.

According to local sources, the location reported has traditionally been used as a ‘relief’ location for some individuals, even the odd  taxi driver who park at a rank close by. A nearby private laneway had to be gated last year in an effort to curb this.

'Can't put their phones down'

Also, one local pointed out that “young fellas can’t put down their phones for a minute, even when doing this (urinating)”, which might give rise to the suggestion of recording themselves.

While there were some calls at the municipal district level in recent years to get more CCTV coverage up on the back lane, it is believed the council is holding off on the additional expense. It is anticipated that the increase in traffic up here when the Roche family open Naas Shopping Centre would preclude the likelihood of re-occurrences of such behaviour.
