Road closures in south Kildare this summer

Eight of these roads are located in the Athy-Castledermot-Moone geographic triangle
A TOTAL of nine local roads in the south east of the county will close for five cumulative months across the summer, from 1 April until 31 August.
Eight of these are located in the Athy-Castledermot-Moone geographic triangle, while the ninth is a few kilometres north of Athy.
The statutory public notice was published recently prompting this reporter to query it with Kildare County Council.
“Can you give any further enlightenment as to why, for such a timespan, other than “to facilitate the maintenance of the road network?”
The council replied with a stock answer – at first.
“Kildare County Council can confirm that this is our standard procedure for the closure of roads to facilitate road improvement works,” the spokesperson said.
However, it was the second half of the short reply that piqued a curiosity.
“The roads in question will only be closed for the number of days necessary to complete the works”.
Looking back at the Statutory Notice, the length of the total closure becomes less of a concern when the small print is read.
Eight of the roads will each close for just a maximum of 10 days each, with just one stretch – the L8O77 from Grangemellon Cross to Grangenolvin – will close for 15 days.
In total, this is just 95 days, staggered across to five months of the summer. This is anticipated to minimise traffic disruption for the predominantly local traffic over this period.
The other eight are: L8061 Milltown-Churchtown, north of Athy; L8076 Ballyroe, Heath, south of Athy between R417 and R418, perpendicular to L8077; L40161 Coltstown, 1km south of Castledermot; L4014 Ballycullane Upper, between Castledermot and Ballyhacket.
