Road closures to come into effect next week for Athy Half Marathon

THE COUNCIL has announced temporary road closures to facilitate the Athy Half Marathon and 10K event, which will take place on Sunday, 9 August 2026.
The closures, made under the Roads Act 1993 and Roads Regulations 1994, will be in effect from 9am to 12:45pm, a duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes.
The affected roads are Distributor Road – from the R418 Roundabout to Fortbarrington Road and the R417 – from Duke Street to Grangemellon.
Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
Travel via Leinster Street through Athy and turn right at Grangemellon onto the R418 to access Athy.
Also, access to estates, including Coneyboro, will be maintained via the R417 access lane.
Kildare County Council has stated that diversion routes will be clearly signposted and have been agreed with An Garda Síochána. Emergency vehicle access and restricted local access will be maintained throughout the road closures.
Road users are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all diversion signage while the event is taking place.
