LESS than a month after their official trip to Athy to unveil a Made of Athy plaque, the family of US Senator Bernie Sanders and his wife, Dr Jane Sanders, returned together for a holiday in the Kildare town.

The visit came in the same week that CNN reported Bernie Sanders as the most popular and trusted politician in America. Dr Jane Sanders, whose family roots trace back to the area, said she was eager for her children to learn about their Irish heritage.

Local historian and genealogist Clem Ryan guided the Sanders family to the ruins of the old Barracks House in Barrowhouse, Athy where their ancestors, the Sheridans once lived. The group also enjoyed a stroll through Athy, taking in the revamped Emily Square, before settling in for a relaxed evening at O’Brien’s pub.

The Sanders family stayed locally during their trip and said they plan to return to Athy on many more occasions in the future.
