Significant road works expected for busy Kildare route

The Athgarvan-Newbridge Road

A MAJOR road improvement project on the R416 between Athgarvan and Walshestown is set to progress into its next phase, according to an update provided to the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District.

The update came in response to a motion from cllr Chris Pender, who sought details on planned resurfacing works, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, timelines, funding and delivery issues along the stretch from Athgarvan Inn to Kildare Crash Centre.

Representatives from the council’s Transportation Department recently carried out an on-site meeting to assess the next steps for the scheme. Initial surveys are now expected to take place in the coming months to help finalise designs required to advance the project.

Council officials also plan to begin engagement with local residents regarding boundary treatments associated with the proposed works.

The next stage will involve the removal of excess vegetation and trees along the route, as well as the installation of new boundaries. These enabling works are deemed necessary before major construction can begin.

The council said the main phase of the project is currently expected to proceed in 2027 and will include road resurfacing alongside new walking and cycling infrastructure.

The project is being delivered jointly by the Roads Capital Team and the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District Office. However, the council noted that limited resources across projects are affecting delivery timelines in this instance.
