THERE was a strong public turnout at a consultation event for the Newbridge draft settlement plan.

The event, held last Saturday in Newbridge Town Hall attracted local residents, business owners, and community representatives.

Organised by local public representatives, cllrs Chris Pender (Social Democrats), Peggy O’Dwyer (Fine Gael) and Tracey O’Dwyer (Fine Gael), the consultation was arranged to complement Kildare County Council’s official consultation in Cedral Park earlier in the week.

The councillors said they wanted to make sure everyone had an opportunity to engage with the draft plan, particularly those who could not attend the original session.

Members of the public had the chance to view maps, zoning plans, and development proposals for Newbridge, and to discuss topics such as housing, active travel routes, schools, open spaces, and local infrastructure needs.

The atmosphere was described as extremely positive, with attendees providing feedback and asking questions about how the plan will shape the town’s growth in the years ahead.

Cllr Pender said: “It was great to see such a strong turnout and such a constructive tone throughout the day. People really engaged with the material and raised thoughtful, practical points about housing, transport, and community facilities. There was a genuine interest in understanding how the plan will impact everyday life in Newbridge. This is exactly the kind of local participation that should guide how our town grows.”

Cllr Peggy O’Dwyer said: “The level of interest from residents and businesses shows how invested people are in the future of Newbridge. The discussions were positive and solutions-focused, with a clear appetite for balanced and sustainable growth."

Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer said: “People want Newbridge to develop in a way that protects its character while improving amenities, accessibility and quality of life. The feedback gathered today will be invaluable as councillors continue to review the draft settlement plan and prepare for its formal consideration.”

The councillors expressed their thanks to all who attended. They also thanked staff from Kildare County Council who have worked to make the plan accessible and comprehensive.

Public submissions remain open, and residents are encouraged to continue engaging with the process by reviewing the plan online or at Newbridge library.
