John Maher tragically lost his life in a workplace accident

THE TOWN of Rathangan is grieving the tragic loss of John Maher, a devoted husband and father who died in a workplace accident on Wednesday afternoon.

John, who lived in Kilmoney North, Rathangan, Kildare, was fatally injured in the incident, which occurred in Rathdrum, Wicklow.

The Health and Safety Authority has been notified, and Gardaí have confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Among the many tributes, one of the most heartfelt came from Rathangan Football Club, where John’s presence and contributions were deeply valued.

“All at Rathangan Football Club are heartbroken to learn of the untimely passing of John Maher,” the club wrote in a statement.

“John was a hugely respected and valued member of our club and community. His knowledge, skill, and dedication were vital to the development of our home pitches at Canal Road – a project that simply wouldn’t have happened without his input. Only recently, John was once again supporting the club with the planning of our Astro Turf pitch. He was always our go-to person when it came to development and improvements.”

“His legacy is built into the very foundations of Rathangan FC.”

The club extended its sympathies to John's wife Tracey, and sons Seán and Fionn, as well as to John’s wider family, many of whom are also involved in the club.

As a mark of respect, all games scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled.

“John will be sorely missed by everyone at Rathangan FC and the wider community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.” the statement concluded.
