TWO men accused of assault in a rural Kildare pub were last week sent for trial in the circuit court. Appearing together in Naas District Court were Anthony Whelan (51), Mullaghnoyne, Suncroft, and his co-defendant Anthony Robinson (30) with an address at The Harbour, Nelson Street, Athy.

Sergeant Dave Hanrahan outlined the allegations against the pair, explaining that on 1 January 2025 in Martin’s Pub, Kildoon, Nurney “there was an altercation between the two defendants and a father and son”.

Mr Whelan was charged with two counts of assault causing harm (section 3), while Mr Robinson was facing only a single charge.

“[Named injured party] got a box in the ear, a box in the nose and was left unconscious,” said the sergeant.

“There were no broken bones,” he confirmed.

Judge Desmond Zaidan ruled that the pair should face a trial on indictment, that is, in the circuit court across the hall, whose present sittings are still ongoing.

He granted legal aid for a barrister each after confirming there were “no issues with fitness to stand trial”, before adding: “Any relating charges I’m directing to be added to the file” as each was formally handed their books of evidence.
