Substantial damage was caused at a site used to access Castletown House over the bank holiday weekend.
The Irish Times reports that four OPW vehicles were overturned while CCTV towers were smashed at Donaghcumper House, Celbridge. Damage worth €500,000 is estimated to have been cause.
OPW staff had returned to Castletown House last month following around a year of closure due to an access dispute.
Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran described the criminal damage as “shocking” and “unacceptable”.
OPW staff have been using Donaghcumper House as a base of access and there had been other recent vandalism incidents at the facility.
The Castletown Gate Protectors posted on their Facebook page: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news this evening about the extensive criminal damage to OPW property at Donaghcumper House. We condemn any such action in the strongest possible terms and hope those responsible are brought to justice swiftly.”
