SUBSIDENCE on the Barretstown to Clongorey road is to be assessed for inclusion in the council's 2025 Roads Programme, councillors were told at the recent meeting of Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District. The matter was raised in a motion by cllr Noel Heavey, who said the issue was “serious” when asking the council to outline a plan to deal with it.

The report to the meeting noted that as it is a bog road, it is very susceptible to subsidence, due to the swelling and drying out nature of the bog. The councillors heard that while a Restoration Improvement Allocation will solve the problem for a period, “it will subside again”.

During discussion, cllr Heavey said that apart from repairs, there needs to be signage to appraise people of the danger, “especially strangers coming along the road”.

"Also, I know it is difficult to assign a a speed limit, but we need to look at that," he added. Supporting his motion, meeting chair Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer said the signage was a good idea.
