MORE and more Kildare women are finding the strength to leave an abusive partner, and so many of them are being ably guided through the minefield by the excellent service from the refuge ‘Teach Tearmainn’.

This was apparent once again recently (23 April) at Naas District Court when a recognized representative of the service sat with nervous woman as they awaited her call.

Shortly after 11am they entered the closed room and the appellant took to the witness box before Judge Desmond Zaidan, and formally asked him for a protection order.

The judge started gently with the simple formalities asked her to confirm her name to match the written statement he had before him, and asked: “who is (named man)?”

“That’s my ex-partner,” she said.

“And why did you want a protection order from him?” the judge asked.

“He’s verbally abusive, drinking every day, he’s saying he’ll put me in the ground,” she began.

“He’s threatened my daughter, picked up a bottle, then he punched her in the face. He was very drunk,” said the woman.

“And that’s all because she asked him (named man) when is it going to be enough?’ She just asked him. She’s a good girl,” added the woman.

“Did she report this?” asked the judge.

“It was up before you here last month,” said the appellant.

"I’ll grant the protection order,” said the judge, which will now stand for two years.
