Owens looking forward to the 2025 season with Treaty United

Dean Owens

Athy man, Dean Owens says he is excited ahead of the 2025 League of Ireland First Division season. The 20-year-old striker signed for the Limerick side over the winter, from Bray Wanderers U20’s. Owens had previously lined out for Klub Kildare.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going. We had a long pre-season. We started back on the 7th of January. That’s over 5 weeks ago. I think that has helped me though, getting to know lads and that. We have a lot of young lads in our squad, so that helps to settle in. But to be honest we have a mixed squad. We have the perfect blend of youth and experience. We have a big squad. We have between 20 and 24 players”, said Owens.

Tommy Barrett’s charges begin their campaign at home to Cobh Ramblers at Market’s Field on Friday night, and the Kildare man is under no illusions about how difficult that game will be.

“Cobh are probably one of the favourites to go up. They have signed a lot of good players. We are confident we can get a positive result, but it will be a tough game.” The former Klub Kildare striker said he has enjoyed adapting from u20’s football to senior football.

“There’s a huge difference between playing 20’s and senior football. Just the increase in physicality alone is huge. I’ve really enjoyed it though. It’s practically like being a full-time footballer because we train in the mornings. We start training in the mornings at 7.30am and we train most days. It is an early start, but I enjoy it”, he said.

Owens received a trial with Treaty after impressing with Bray U20’s at the back end of last season.

“We played Treaty in an U20’s game last year. I thought I played well in the game. Treaty’s U20’s coach then recommended me to Tommy the first-team manager, and I got a trial then at the end of last season and now I’ve signed. I’ve really enjoyed working under Tommy. He has a lot of experience, and he tells you as it is. He’s very honest, which I like.

For this season, I just want to play as much as possible and because I’m a striker I want to score some goals. As a team we don’t really have a goal, we’re just taking it game by game.”
