A DUBLIN man who admitted speeding but did not pay the fine because he alleged there were six other men by the same name living in his area was nonetheless convicted at a hearing of Carlow District Court before Judge Geraldine Carthy.
Garda Cullen was conducting a speed check point on the N81 in Baltinglass on Saturday 4 October 2025 and detected a white Citroen Berlingo travelling at over 120kph in an 80kph zone.
A fixed-charge notice was issued but went unpaid.
John Casey (32) of 9 St Aidan’s Close, Tallaght, Dublin 24 gave evidence to the court that he does not receive post directly, as “the postman is afraid of my neighbour’s dog” and said out of ten houses in the estate, six people were called John Casey.
He said he had received the court summons after his wife went to collect a package for his daughter. He said he couldn’t read or write and the only reason he was present in court was because someone from his solicitor’s office rang him to let him know there was a hearing.
Judge Carthy did not accept Mr Casey’s evidence and fined him €300 for the offence. She fixed recognisance at €500 own bond.
