ATHY is set to sparkle once again as Athy Town Promoters prepare for one of the most anticipated nights of the year, The Big Switch, taking place on Emily Square on Sunday, November 30.

Now in its 19th year, this much-loved free, family-friendly event will welcome the arrival of Santa Claus, who will make his grand entrance in his iconic Santa Truck.

Organised by Athy Town Promoters, the celebration has been months in the making, with the Christmas lights team, led by Michael Holligan of Advanced Maintenance & Energy Solutions, working tirelessly to ensure the town shines brighter than ever.

The evening promises a packed line-up. Santa, Mrs Claus and the elves will all make special appearances, and entertainment will include performances by Noelle Robinson and the Young Violins, Pride of Place runner-up Sing and Sign, a visit from Community Garda Seán, and festive music from DJ Gary to keep spirits high throughout the night.

Santa will also be collecting letters from local children. Families are reminded to drop them into the special red post box on Emily Square ahead of his arrival.

Locals say this magical annual event never fails to deliver a vibrant atmosphere and a strong sense of community.

“It consistently draws big crowds, creating a sense of unity and excitement that resonates throughout the town,” said Athy Cathaoirleach, cllr Ivan Keatley.

He added that this year’s event will be bigger and better, and another wonderful opportunity to make full use of the newly revamped Emily Square.

Cllr Keatley also encouraged people to support local businesses in Athy and the surrounding areas as the festive season gets underway.

The Big Switch is supported by funding from the Athy Municipal District Local Property Tax (LPT).

Residents are encouraged to pull out their Christmas jumpers and join friends and family for another unforgettable night of lights, community spirit, and festive cheer.

Festivities begin at 5.45pm, with the official lighting of Athy’s Christmas lights expected at around 6.30pm. The much-loved Santa Truck will roll into the back of Emily Square at approximately the same time, followed by a Christmas parade setting off from the Tax Rebate Office.

From 5pm, the stage will host a variety of entertainment, with music and performances to keep spirits high all evening.
