Get ready for the Big Switch in Athy later this month

Last year's Big Switch event in Athy. This year's special event will take place on 24 November

Christmas will officially be kick-started in Athy on Sunday 24 November!

People of all ages will don festive garb and descend on the Back Square at 6.30pm to witness ‘The Big Switch’, the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights.

This family-friendly event is free and will see the main man himself making a grand entrance – Santa Claus will be arriving in style in his big, festive Santa truck!

“We are delighted to let you all know that the Santa truck will be back on the road this year supporting LauraLynn Children's Hospice for the fourth year running,” said cllr Aoife Breslin, cathaoirleach of Athy Municipal District and Chair of Athy Town Promoters. “Since 2021, they have raised a whopping €131,321.32 and hope to raise even more this year... with your help!”

The Big Switch is organised by Athy Town Promoters and the Christmas lights team (Michael Holligan from Advanced Maintenance & Energy Solutions) has been working hard in recent weeks to ensure everything shines perfectly.

Alongside the appearance of Santa, Mrs Claus and the elves, the line-up includes an unforgettable evening of performances! The incredible Katie Roycroft and Carrie Haskins will grace the stage, joined by the lively beats of DJ Gary. Our local Garda singing community will also lend their voices, adding to the spirit of the night.

Athy Town Promoters are thrilled to present a special performance by a talented young violinist group from Athy, accompanied by the remarkable Noelle Robinson.

Santa will also be collecting letters from local children – don't forget to post them beforehand in the special red post box in the back of Emily Square!

Cllr Breslin also emphasised the positive local impact, both culturally and economically, as the event launches the Shop Local campaign, encouraging support for local businesses as the holiday season begins. There will also be a magical holiday experience on Wednesday 4 December with the annual ‘Silent Santa’ event at Athy Library!

This special event, running from 5.30-7.30pm, is designed for children who prefer a calm, crowd-free setting to meet Santa. Presented by Athy Town Promoters in conjunction with the Athy Special Needs Action Group, this warm, welcoming atmosphere allows little ones to enjoy the holiday spirit at their own pace.

“We look forward to celebrating with you and your family at this joyful, relaxed event – where every child is welcome to enjoy a peaceful moment with Santa,” cllr Breslin said. The Big Switch and Silent Santa events are supported by Athy Municipal District LPT funding.
