Colin Malone as The King in upcoming horror film 'Rumpelstiltskin'

CURRAGH-BORN actor Colin Malone will debut his role as the king in the upcoming horror film Rumpelstiltskin which will show for the first time at Glasgow’s highly esteemed Fright Fest in March.

Colin started acting with the Silken Thomas Players under director Sean Judge, where he competed on the amateur circuit in All-Ireland finals and international festivals.

Colin said: “I was with them for 10 years and kind of learned a lot of stagecraft and projection and characterisation and got so much experience underneath my belt.”

“Plus, Sean was a man who was very generous with his knowledge and he was very far ahead of his time.”

Silken Thomas was where Colin met the two loves of his life; acting and his now wife Maria who was working as a stage manager.

He said: “She was very much involved in it. A play is only as good as its stage crew and its director.”

Since then, Colin has led a very successful acting career, even recently winning the best actor award at the Underground Cinema Awards for his role in Jonathan’s Orders.

Colin was shocked and delighted with his award: “I really didn't expect it at all. I was like a rabbit caught in headlights.”

“It's the craft of acting that I'm constantly chasing and trying to get better all the time. The awards are not something you chase, but it was a really good feeling getting it.”

With March getting closer, Colin is excited for the first screening of Rumpelstiltskin.

“As a horror fan, Frightfest is the biggest horror thing in the world that you can be a part of. And then to actually have a movie that's premiering at it, it's a fantastic feeling.”

Colin plays the the king in the film and improvised the role to make it his own.

“I played with the physicality of the character, and when the crown and heavy cloaks went on, I hunched him down and became very small and weaselly. It was just a really enjoyable shoot.”

Colin keeps himself booked and busy with a very varied selection of roles, even working on motion capture performance, and creature work for screen and video games.

A dream role of his would be the nun from The Conjuringmovie series.

“Something like The Nun or some very big physical transformation. And you adapt this thing with prosthetics and contact lenses and you become this kind of different entity. I'd really love to play something like that.”

Also in the pipeline is a one-man show that Colin is putting together called Nevermore where he performs two tales from Edgar Allan Poe back to back, which is currently in the rehearsal stage.
