Newbridge Parishes Community Raceday returns to the Curragh

At the launch of the Newbridge Parishes Comunity Raceday were Daniel Moore (Sarsfields GAA), Ella Morrissey (Kildare Irish Figure Dancers), Robert Mehigan (Newbridge RFC), Harry Hurley Lynch (Moorefield GAA), Farida Ibirgobada (Kildare Irish Figure Dancers) and Madison Gardiner (Newbridge Athletics Club)

A VERY popular family day in the racing calendar will return to The Curragh this year on May bank holiday Monday with the Newbridge Parishes Community Raceday.

Almost €600,000 has been raised since the Newbridge Parishes Community Raceday was launched 36 years ago, with funds distributed directly to community-based projects in St Conleth’s and Church of Ireland parishes. This year’s race day will celebrate our local sporting heroes and will feature exhibition games by children from various local sports clubs including Newbridge Athletics Club, Moorefield GAA, Sarsfield GAA, Newbridge Rugby Club, Cill Dara Rugby Club, Newbridge Town FC and Celtic FC, which will take place between races on the racetrack.

Performances from local dance groups will also be taking place on the Champions Hall stage and there will be a variety of free family entertainment throughout the afternoon in the Moyglare Kids Zone to keep the little ones entertained.

People are also encouraged to buy tickets for a fundraising raffle to support worthy projects in the parish. People can get the raffle tickets at upcoming Masses this week, from the parish centre in Newbridge, and on the race day. Raffle prizes include: dinner and B&B at Barberstown Castle, a €500 voucher from Newbridge Travel, a €400 One4All voucher and a lot more.

Newbridge parish priest Fr Ruairí O’Domhnaill commented: “This is a very special day for our parishes, which raises much-needed funds for various projects within our community.” “We would like to thank the Curragh for their continued support, and we hope that everyone will join us on Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May, for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable day with lots of entertainment for all the family.”

Church of Ireland Reverend Isobel Jackson added: “We are delighted that The Curragh continues to generously host the annual Newbridge Parishes Raceday, which makes a significant contribution to the Church. It allows us to come together as a community to celebrate and support each other.”

The Coolmore Stud Mooresbridge Stakes (Group 2) is the feature race of an eight-race card. The Keadeen Hotel, PG Duffy & Sons Citroen, and The Treacy Group are sponsoring races on the day. Gates open at 12 noon, with the first race at 1.15 pm.

Tickets for the event can be bought in advance at www.curragh.ie; under-18s go free when accompanied by an adult.
