IN what is probably the only committee room in Kildare where the light never goes off, no sooner than they have taken down the Christmas lights around Newbridge, but they have now launched their plans for the St Patrick’s Day Parade in the Keadeen Hotel recently.

Known for having the second biggest parade outside Dublin, last year an estimated 20,000 people came to the town for the Parade, and stood behind 1,550 barriers – almost two kilometres.

This year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade will celebrate ‘Volunteers and Business, the Heart of a Community’, highlighting the vital role that voluntary organisations, community clubs and local businesses play in building and sustaining community life.

“Under the theme ‘Marching as One – Volunteers and Business’ the parade will recognise the people who give their time, skills, employment and local investment to support inclusion, participation and civic pride,” said Morgan McCabe.

Voluntary groups and community organisations are being encouraged to place their volunteers at the heart of their parade entry, showcasing the work they do locally while also highlighting opportunities for new volunteers to get involved.

From mentors and drivers to committee members and fundraisers, the parade will act as a live call to action for community participation.

Sports clubs and community clubs will march with players, coaches, volunteers and families together, celebrating teamwork and commitment.

Clubs are also encouraged to highlight the volunteers they need, including coaches, referees and administrative roles, reinforcing the message that sport and community activity rely on shared effort.

“This year’s parade is about recognising the people who make things happen every day,” Chairperson Carl Murphy said.

“A strong community is built through hard work, generosity and partnership. A community doesn’t just happen; it is created by participation.

“Newbridge need people to get more involved in our town and make it a better place for all, especially our children and teenagers.”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend, support participants and consider volunteering with local groups and clubs.

The St Patrick’s Day Parade promises colour, music and pride from 11.45 am on 17 March.
