Heritage storytelling event in North Kildare
Those who gathered for the community storytelling event in Carbury, Kildare
STORIES, memories, poems and even a song were shared at a community storytelling event in north Kildare on Saturday 24 January.
The morning session in Carbury, 'Sharing our Past, Imagining our Future' was organised by Tóchar Stories, a community engagement project working in the Midlands and connecting with people and places close to wetlands, bogs and fens.
Local artist and photographer Shane Hynan, secretary of the Knockirr & Carbury Bog Group, presented his work inspired by the changing nature of the peatlands and how we value them while Longford artist Luke Casserly facilitated a story web workshop with people sharing a little of their own story of place and belonging.
Retired GP Dr Philip Brady, from Edenderry, shared some of his poetry, and his own interest how the name of places, including Carbury and the River Boyne, reveals layers of history and heritage.
The event was co-hosted by the Carbury Village Residents Association and after the morning Rev Alan Melbourne invited participants to visit Carbury Church of Ireland and shared some of the church's 250 year history as well as playing the church organ to showcase its amazing acoustics.
Tóchar Stories is part of Tóchar Wetlands Restoration, a three-year scheme under National Parks and Wildlife Service, co-funded by the Irish Government and the European Union through the Just Transition Fund in Ireland.
