Newbridge Town's Brooke Dunne added another accolade to her glittering CV when she was named as the best goalkeeper at the World Deaf Futsal Championships in Italy.

Dunne starred between the posts for an Irish team who exceeded all expectations on them by reaching the semi-finals before losing to Brazil. Ireland had brilliant win over England in the quarter-finals to secure their place in the last four.

Her award made her just the sixth Irish Deaf Athlete to receive an international individual award, stretching all the way back to 1996.

It's just the latest award for the hugely talented and versatile Dunne.

As far back as 2014, she was part of the Ireland team who reached the semi-finals of the U19 European Championships when aged just 17, alongside the likes of Katie McCabe, Clare Shine and Sarah Rowe.

In 2017, she was in goal for UCD Waves when they played in the FAI Cup final at the Aviva Stadium. Two years later she had switched to an outfield role to help the KDFL win a historic first Angela Hearst title. Two years later she was back between the posts, but had switched codes by then to play for the Kildare Ladies GAA team and she also represented Sarsfields in a senior county final in 2023.

Last year, her performances outfield for Newbridge Town saw her picked to represent the Eastern Women's Football League.

Her international exploits with the Irish Deaf team missed Newbridge Town's momentous first round FAI Cup win over Whitehall Rangers on Friday but she will be back in time for their quarter-final and Newbridge will be the stronger for the inclusion of this talented star.
