Fit Focus: Lessons to be learned from Trump

Say what you want about Trump but look at his determination and commitment to achieving his goal

I DON’T have any view on American politics and I don’t have enough of an interest to have an educated opinion on individual political policies over there but there are some really important lessons that we can learn from Donald Trump winning the presidential election for a second time this year.

He had a goal and had complete conviction in his goal and would rest at nothing until he won. Put whatever he says or does to one side and look at his determination and unwavering commitment to achieving his goal. He is 78 years of age and he travelled the width and breathe of the country and held, according to himself, over 300 rallies. You can argue about other factors but that is great determination and self belief.

He was hit with obstacle after obstacle along the way but never gave up. It would have been easy for him to roll over and give up but he never did. He wouldn’t admit defeat and wouldn’t sacrifice at anything other than achieving his goal.

We all have dreams no more so than Donald Trump had a dream of becoming president of the USA but how many of us set goals? Because if we do not set goals then these dreams are nothing more than just dreams. But then once we have set these goals we need consistency and commitment to achieve these goals. We need unwavering focus, we will get blown off course but we have to get back online and achieve the next goal followed by the next goal followed by the next. Only then will we be successful.

That is all it takes to be successful. It is easy an easy formula but so few of us are willing to put in the effort or commitment to achieving these goals. That is why it is so easy to become successful now because there are so many people who lack the conviction and believe in themselves to be able to commit wholly to their dreams by setting goals and then don’t commit to action steps day in and day out to achieve these goals.

If you can imagine a large oak tree sitting out in your back garden. The trunk is so big you can’t wrap your hands around it. But it has become dangerous and you need to cut it down and the only thing you have is an axe.

You could go out and start chopping the tree with the axe working away tirelessly, eventually you will become tired and disheartened and most likely give up because you have been chopping away at this tree and are getting nowhere.

The tree is no closer to falling than it was when you started. The alternative is you take the long-term approach to the project, every day you go out and chop at the tree five times and you do this day on day, week after week.

Gradually you will start to build up confidence in yourself and the task will become more and more enjoyable until you actually look forward to going out chopping at the tree every day.

The exact same principle applies to your goals, break them down into much smaller tasks and build on each task day after day building your confidence at every step along the way.

Ask yourself what five things can you do today to help you get closer to your goals?

We are only eight weeks out from Christmas and this is a particular time of year where people put looking after themselves and getting on top of their health and fitness on the long finger and say they will tackle that in the new year.

This is all procrastination instead of committing fully to achieving your goal. There is something blocking you for some reason but there are simple steps everybody can implement everyday to help them improve their health and fitness at no cost.

1, Get out into nature, go for a walk or a cycle for 20-30 minutes a day; 2, Abstain from alcohol; 3, Build good sleep hygiene habits. Go to bed at roughly the same time every night in a cool dark bedroom; 4, Cut out T.V and screens 1 hour before bed; 5, Wake up early and cook homecooked meals from fresh natural ingredients.

Maybe none of these suggestions suit you but you are welcome to pick your own five goals. Write a checklist in a journal and tick them off every day you complete your task, slowly build momentum and by the time Christmas arrives you will look back and will be a very different person.
