Kildare Rescue Tails: Return scheme fundraiser surpasses expectations

BACK in February 2025, our cat team launched a fundraising campaign to buy veterinary-quality quarantine caging for our very sick cats.

These cages cost several thousand euros each, so a special plan was needed.

The team came up with the idea of utilising the new return/recycle plastic bottle/can system that had recently been launched nationally.

Nobody could have anticipated how successful this plan would turn out to be, which of course, was not without the dedication of many who collected and hauled bags to the machines.

Tremendous support was received from the local community, with local businesses and schools getting involved too.

Thankfully, the target was surpassed which allowed the team to also buy some cat traps at €70 each for its Trap/Neuter/Release scheme.

This has prevented hundreds, if not thousands, of unwanted kittens being born into the wild.

The intense collection campaign has now ceased to allow donors the choice to support another worthy cause but, as donations continue to arrive, the team will use any new funds to support the neutering/spaying of feral cats.

We are extremely grateful to all who have supported and indeed continue to support this scheme.

As normal, we have several sighthounds in our care at the moment who are slow to find forever homes.

All are young, gentle dogs who do not require very active homes, so they are perfect as companion dogs.

The feedback from those who adopt whippets/lurchers/greyhounds is extremely positive and adopters often wonder why the breeds are so overlooked.

We truly find that Sighthounds owners are the best advocates for adopting the breeds. They are such easy dogs to care for.

We feature four of our current residents here: Kimmie, Ethel, Nina and Jasper whose details and photographs can all be found on our website www.kwwspca.ie/adopt-a-dog.

As ever, we offer our thanks to all who support our work. We are a volunteer only staffed. Registered charity so our fundraising continues throughout the summer with several events lined up.
