WORK is now underway on the National Cycle Network (NCN) pilot project along the R448 in south Kildare between Moone and Timolin with Kildare County Council confirming that contractor Glas Civil Engineering is currently mobilising on site.
The project, delivered in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), will provide a segregated cycle route between the R747 junction and south of Moone village.
The Council said the project has already undergone formal public consultation under Section 38 of the Roads Traffic Act in the summer of 2024. Feedback from the public and elected members led to several amendments to the original plans, which were presented to members at the September 2024 Municipal District Meeting.
At the most recent Athy Municipal District meeting, council engineers reaffirmed their commitment to engaging with local communities as construction progresses.
“The project team will engage with the local community to provide updates and ensure clear communication before any on-the-ground works commence,” said Daragh Conlan, Senior Engineer with Kildare County Council’s Projects Team.
The scheme represents a significant step in rethinking how road space is allocated in rural towns and villages. It aims to improve safety for cyclists while encouraging more sustainable travel options along the R448 corridor.
Although cllr Veralouise Behan called for the extension of cycle lanes toward Crookstown — citing existing infrastructure further south in Carlow and Kilkenny that proves great for tourism in the area — the council confirmed that such expansions are not part of the current phase.
However, officials indicated that future extensions may be explored depending on the pilot’s success and funding availability.
