SOUTH Kildare has seen an increase in political hostility, with the recent defacing and theft of election posters belonging to councillor Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh.
Eight posters were defaced in Monasterevin, while four more disappeared without a trace in Ballitore.
Cllr Ní Raghallaigh, a mother of four and Sinn Féin’s candidate for Kildare South in the forthcoming general election, has been serving as a councillor for just six months.
“These attacks, targeting materials she personally funded, represent not only a blatant breach of the law but also a concerning new low in South Kildare’s political climate,” said Thomas Redmond, her constituency organiser.
“These acts are disrespectful and a direct affront to democracy. They won’t silence me or the work we are doing to deliver for the people of this community,” added cllr Ní Raghallaigh.
“If anyone has any information about the defacement or theft of these posters, I urge them to contact me directly. This isn’t just an attack on a candidate; it’s an attack on the democratic process,” said Mr Redmond.
The issue of targeting Sinn Féin candidates has been reported nationwide, but the frequency of such incidents in Monasterevin is particularly alarming.
Despite these challenges, cllr Ní Raghallaigh remained resolute.
“My focus is on working for the people of South Kildare. These acts of sabotage will not deter me,” she said.
