Mixed progress on Athy footpath repairs

Footpath works are set to be carried out in one Athy estate before the end of September, whilst funding constraints are delaying other works in the town.

Cllr Brian Dooley brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District proposing that Kildare County Council carries out civil works replacing and upgrading footpaths in the Forrest Park and Páirc Bríd estates.

Cllr Aoife Breslin brought forward a question on the matter, asking the council to confirm when remedial works will start on footpaths in the town.

Municipal District engineer Kevin Dunne issued identical responses to the two councillors. 

His written response said that the works in Forest Park are ‘programmed for end of Quarter 3’ meaning they are set to be carried by the end of September. 

Mr Dunne’s report stated that ‘all other footpaths will be subject to the availability of funding’.

Mr Dunne told the meeting that Páirc Bríd is on the council’s list of works to be carried out in future.

Works to replace footpaths in Forest Park were due to begin in October 2025 but were stopped. 

When Brian Dooley questioned the council on the matter in February, the council response indicated that funding allocations were holding the works up.
