Plans for Kildare retirement village scrapped

Plans for a retirement village in Co Kildare have been rejected by the local authority.
Meath-based firm Arc Villages Ltd had sought to build a retirement village of 92 housing units on the Curragh Road, Athgarvan.
The project would mostly have included two-bed housing units like maisonettes, apartments and courtyard style houses and the demolition of two single-storey vacant houses currently at the site.
The application generated a lot of local interest with a number of objections to the project.
The plans were revised down to 86 from 92 during the planning process. Kildare planners ultimately refused the application on a number of grounds, stating the project would contravene the county development plan.
The land for the proposal was zoned for ‘community and educational’ and the planners said it was “open for consideration” whether a retirement village fit this definition and whether the community would have access to a ‘community building’ in the project.
Planners also felt that there was a shortage of public open space in the design and would represent a substandard form of development while the lack of footpaths in trafficked areas was also cited.
