The morning after breaking a European record held by Romelu Lukaku, Michael Noonan was back in school at Ardscoil Rath Iomgháin in Rathangan.

Noonan had a night to remember on Thursday night when he became the youngest goal scorer in European club competition history when scoring the only goal as Shamrock Rovers beat Molde of Norway in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off tie.

Despite his heroics on Thursday night in Norway, the 16-year-old was in school bright and early on Friday to attend his transition year classes.

Principal of Ardscoil Rath Iomhgháin secondary school, Mr. Paul Murphy stated that all in the school were proud of the young striker.

“We are so proud of Michael. First of all, to make his debut with Shamrock Rovers and then of course scoring the winning goal. We are delighted for him,” said Murphy.

Noonan signed for Shamrock Rovers from St. Patrick’s Athletic recently and impressed manager, Stephen Bradley to earn his first start, on Wednesday night.

Despite his impressive sporting ability, Murphy was keen to stress was grounded the former Monasterevin AFC player is.

“I was a bit surprised to see him in school today, to be honest. But he’s a brilliant person. He’s very grounded. He was happy to come into school today and to share his achievements with his classmates. He was in his Transition year classes this morning,” said the principal.

Following his move over the winter to Rovers, Noonan will leave his local school and will transfer to the fee-paying Ashfield College in Dublin from September. He will benefit from the arrangement that allows young Rovers’ footballers to continue their education.

According to Mr. Murphy, Noonan has adapted well to attending school, while also being with Shamrock Rovers’ senior team.

“He’s balancing it very well, the education and the football. He is in school with us frequently. We wish Michael all the best for the rest of his football career.”
