Nurney school celebrates World Book Day

Nurney NS celebrated World Book Day, as it does each year, with a book fair and fancy dress – with a twist!
“It’s the international holiday where schools celebrate literature and books, and that’s what we do in Nurney,” said principal Dr Vinny Thorpe.
“So all the kids bring in their favourite book and dress up like their favourite author. And it’s everyone – 200 children, and 14 staff!” he said.

“It’s just one day every year, but you’d have a right mix. JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, David Walliams, Dr Seuss, they’re all very popular. That’s all the big names in fiction.
“In non-fiction, there are a lot of farming books around here, big tractor books, a very keen interest in farm machinery, rugby players, soccer players, lots of sports personalities, so dressing up as all sorts!
“The younger children dress as witches and wizards and unicorns. This year there were a lot of princes and princesses, because
was very popular because of the movie,” he explained.
“But really, it’s not about the dressing up. We get a book fair company to drop in 1,000 books to purchase at half-price. This means when we sell them on we can also get a commission, so it’s a win-win-win for everyone,” he said.

“Reading is the key to everything, and we get to restock our shelves every year with new books. It’s great!”
