Two Kildare venues are set to host a play described as a story of love, passion, laughter, heartache and victory.

‘The Girls in the Boat’ is the work of Angela Keogh, directed by her husband and fellow writer John MacKenna who is originally from Castledermot.

Set on the fictional shores of St Brendan's Lake, Lakeside Boat Club is a vibrant rowing club at the edge of an Irish town. Four women, whose lives intertwine, face their struggles on and off the water.

The choreography for this work reflects the elegance, strength and endurance of the characters. The play gives the audience an insight into what drives the athletes and how they overcome the challenges that competitive sport and life bring.

The work asks some uncomfortable questions about winning and losing but ultimately it is a celebration of the deeper victories that sport provides alongside the incredibly focused engagement that competition demands.

It will be performed on Saturday 31 August at Confey GAA Club, and then on Friday 6 September at Croí Anú in Moone.

The latter, incidentally, is the venue for The Hedge School, a creative workshop programme run by John and Angela which allows people to explore their creativity through writing or music with like-minded people.

Tickets for the upcoming performances are just €15 and are available via Eventbrite. For more information, see theharvestpress.ie.
