The late Richard Butler

An exhibition of the art of the late Richard Butler has been confirmed in the Naas Library and Cultural Centre in February in direct response to a motion from a local councillor.

Cllr Bill Clear brought the motion at this month’s meeting of the Naas Municipal District where it fell on the most receptive ears.

“I’m seeking that the council organises an exhibition of Richard Butler’s paintings, which were previously displayed for many years in the Naas Town Hall,” he asked.

Richard, who was originally from Woodlands in the town, died tragically young in 2023 in Torrevieja in Spain.

He had previously been commissioned by Naas Town Council to create works which depicted various scenes and significant historical events from the history of Naas.

“In response to the motion by councillor Clear, Kildare Library Service has booked the gallery space in Naas Library and Cultural Centre — formerly Naas Town Hall — for an exhibition of the late Richard Butler’s paintings,” confirmed county librarian Gillian Allen.

“The earliest available date for this exhibition is February 2026 and it will run for two weeks, open to the public for viewing,” she added.

“The Library Service will liaise with Mr Butler’s family members to arrange an official launch of the exhibition and a reception.

“We also hope to arrange for a local historian to be present to provide information on the historical events depicted in the paintings as part of the evening event.”
