MONASTEREVIN families are in for a treat this St Patrick’s Day, with the local parade which is set to take over the town in celebration this March.
On Tuesday, 17 March, at 1pm the celebrations will begin with some music and activities for the little ones, before the parade starts at 2pm. The parade will take route down Main Street, Monasterevin, and festivities will continue past 3pm – making it a full afternoon of fun for the whole family.
The parade is an annual community led event organised by the Monasterevin St Patrick’s Day Festival Committee, and it’s a much loved tradition in the town. This year is particularly special as it is the first year featuring a newly formed committee has taken on the organisation of the parade, which has seen strong enthusiasm and support locally.
Every year, the parade attracts large crowds from Monasterevin and further afield to celebrate community spirit, joined by local schools, clubs, community groups and businesses. And no St Patrick’s parade is complete without exciting floats, lively music and fantastic performances by local talents.
This year, the festival committee has organised live music and entertainment both before and after the parade, along with carnival games and children’s rides, turning Monasterevin into a full-blown festival for the day.
“The parade itself will get underway at 2pm, but we are encouraging people to come into the town early as the celebrations will begin from 1pm with live music from Kovanta, helping to build a great atmosphere ahead of the parade,” said Caroline Morrissey, the chairwoman for the Monasterevin St Patrick’s Day Festival Committee.
“Following the parade, the celebrations will continue with live music from local singers Jack and Dean from 3pm in the Community Centre, along with carnival games, free kids treats and children’s rides, so there will be plenty happening throughout the afternoon for families and visitors of all ages.”
She added: “This year’s parade theme is Recycling and Sustainability, and we are delighted to see local schools, clubs and community groups embracing the theme by showcasing creativity while also highlighting the importance of caring for our environment.
“As a new committee organising the event for the first time, we are really proud of what has been put together and of the strong support we have received from the local community. Our aim is to create a fun, inclusive and welcoming St Patrick’s Day celebration that everyone in Monasterevin can enjoy.”
