Army bomb squad called out near Athy

The Defence Forces’s ordnance corps were called out near Athy on Friday after a suspicious package was discovered.

Gardaí sealed off the road near Milltown Bridge before lunchtime as an item, believed to be a jar containing a substance was found.

The emergency ordnance unit attended the scene as a precaution and following investigation, the item was deemed to pose no risk to the public.

The ordnance corps provides the only explosive ordnance disposal service within the state.
