A dog from Monasterevin has been named as a finalist in the nation's Bravest Pet Award category.

After receiving more than 700 nominations from across Ireland, just 30 finalists representing 15 counties were selected to attend the national awards ceremony in Kilkenny.

Ranger was the sole finalist representing Kildare, securing his place among the country's most inspiring pets and animal welfare champions.

The Bravest Pet Award recognises pets who have shown exceptional courage in the face of illness, injury or adversity, and whose strength inspires those around them.

Ranger Dunne was selected as one of just three finalists in the category after overcoming remarkable challenges at a young age.

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma – bone cancer -at just one year old, Ranger underwent the amputation of a front leg followed by six rounds of chemotherapy.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Ranger has continued to thrive, winning hearts with his resilience, determination and positive spirit.

"Being selected as a finalist means so much to us,” said Andrew Dunne, Ranger's owner.

“Ranger came into our lives during one of the hardest times for our family and gave us hope when we needed it most.

“Watching him face his illness with such resilience has been truly inspiring.

“We are so proud of how far he has come and honoured to celebrate his courage and share his story."

Hosted by broadcaster, sustainability influencer and DJ Fionnuala Moran, the Petmania Ruby Heart Awards celebrated the extraordinary impact animals have on people's lives while recognising the dedicated individuals, organisations and communities working to improve animal welfare across Ireland.

Although the Bravest Pet Award was ultimately won by another finalist, Ranger's selection among the national finalists reflects the extraordinary courage and determination he has shown throughout his journey.

Ranger was chosen from hundreds of nominations submitted across all award categories.

His story stood out as an inspiring example of resilience and the special bond between pets and their owners.

The Petmania Ruby Heart Awards continue to provide a platform for recognising the animals, individuals, organisations and businesses whose actions strengthen communities and improve the lives of pets throughout Ireland.

This year's Kildare representative demonstrated the bravery, perseverance and joy that make pets such an important part of people's families and communities.
