Lauren has been returned to her owner

TD for Kildare South, Shónagh Ní Raghallaigh, has responded to developments in a case that sparked widespread public concern over the welfare of a diabetic dog seized earlier this month in Co. Laois.

“Over the past fortnight, my office received a large volume of correspondence from concerned constituents and members of the public in relation to the condition of a dog named Lauren,” said Deputy Ní Raghallaigh.

“Like many others, I was very concerned about the animal’s welfare, and I wrote to the Garda Commissioner to seek clarification on how the case was being handled.

“I am now glad to share that I’ve received a detailed response from An Garda Síochána confirming that the dog was thoroughly assessed by two independent veterinary professionals before any decision was taken to return her to her owners.

“Both vets verified that the dog suffers from diabetes, that her condition is being managed, and that her appearance—though concerning—is consistent with her diagnosis.

“One of these vets had been providing ongoing care to the dog over a number of years.”

The deputy added: “I was particularly reassured to hear that Gardaí have committed to continuing to check in on the dog to ensure that her care plan is being followed properly, and that she is receiving the diabetes treatment she needs.

“I would also like to commend the volunteers who stepped in to provide care for Lauren over the course of that weekend, including those who brought her to emergency veterinary services and helped coordinate her temporary care. Their compassion and commitment speak volumes.

“While some of the images shared publicly were understandably distressing, it is important to recognise the steps gardaí took to secure veterinary evidence and act in accordance with expert medical advice. That said, this case highlights the deep level of public concern about animal welfare, and the importance of transparency and follow-up in such situations.”
