First Dates Ireland Derek and Karen hit it off in the First Dates restaurant, bonding over past life experiences

LAST Thursday Kildare nursing student Karen was on our screens, seen to be swept off her feet by biscuit lover and broadband engineer Derek from Cavan on First Dates Ireland.

Karen, who has had a “horrible spiral downward” when it came to dating in the past, said the experiences did significant damage to her self-esteem so much so that she ended up falling into depression.

“I didn’t want to be here anymore. I had to find my self-worth,” she explained.

Returning to education to become a nurse has since really helped with her mental health:

“Going back to school at this age is really hard but I love it, I’ve always wanted to be a nurse. I’m the best version of myself when I’m in the hospital,” she said.

Both 46-year-old Derek and 40-year-old Karen hit it off instantly on the realisation that they had a friend in common.

After that the conversation took off as the pair talked about bad dating app experiences and past relationships, which quickly turned into a conversation about potential children, pets and their shared love for dessert.

“He has the same values as me," said Karen.

Karen, who told producers she was looking for someone to settle down and have kids with, was delighted on this revelation, and said:

"He wants to get married, he wants to have kids. You found me that unicorn.”

“Absolute divil” for a biscuit Derek, who earlier remarked to producers that his ideal woman would be a Milkado, later told producers that if Karen was a biscuit she would be “all of them put together.”

I think it’s safe to say that the two were a match made in heaven.
