The canal at Rathangan

THE lack of litter bins along the river and at the canal footbridge leading to the playground and park in Rathangan is causing litter pollution in the river, according to cllr Brian O'Loughlin.

He raised the latter at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal Distirct, when he asked for the reinstatement of litter bins that had been previously removed for the area.

"It's a point along the river where there's a lot of traffic, and because it is so exposed the rubbish ends up in the river if not picked up pretty quickly," he said. He accepted the report to his motion, which said there was "no budgetary capacity" to provide additional bins, but asked if another solution could be found.

"The Tidy Towns group carry out great work in the area, but they would like to see at least one of the removed bins replaced. They have said they're prepared to fund it themselves, but it would have to be emptied."

After a short discussion, officials suggested that if there is another bin in the town area that is less used than others, they would be happy “to look at that” as a solution', but at the moment resources are 'fully extended'.
