A recently approved animal welfare facility near Kildare town is now facing fresh uncertainty after objections were lodged with Kildare County Council, triggering an appeal of the decision.

The project, led by the Kildare West Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA), was granted planning permission for a purpose-built facility at Newtown featuring two cattery buildings, a large dog kennel building, and extensive supporting infrastructure.

The development, which aims to significantly expand KWWSPCA’s animal welfare services across the county, was revised in response to a request for further information.

Updates to the plans included a comprehensive noise management plan, revised landscaping and boundary treatments, enhanced ecological reports, and refined wastewater treatment specifications.

However, following the council’s decision to approve the application, a local man Joe Byrne submitted an objection to An Coimisiún Pleanála raising serious concerns about the environmental and infrastructural impact of the proposed facility.

The objector cites the ecological sensitivity of the area, which borders the conservation-designated Kings Bog — home to petrifying spring and rare species of animals.

The objection outlines concerns about increased traffic on the narrow laneway outside the site.

The lane, used by local residents including vulnerable individuals, is described as unsuitable for heavy or increased traffic volumes.

The appeal is due to be decided by 20 October.
