Flooding in Athy in 2009

Athy Municipal District received updates on the state of the Athy Flood Relief Scheme that is being carried out by the OPW in conjunction with Kildare County Council at its most recent meeting. A flood risk assessment began in 2017, and the conclusion was that the relief scheme was to be undertaken.

Areas in Athy have seen massive flooding incidents that have led to the start of this scheme, one very serious one in 2009, and the most recent flooding occurred in 2020. It was also found that 99 properties in Athy town centre were at risk of future flooding, which further cements the importance of the scheme’s delivery.

The scheme that started in 2023 is now announced to be in the design stage, which will include the construction of flood walls and embankments to support flood relief measures. The construction of flood walls and embankments are scheduled to be completed by 2030.
