The two ‘Michael English by Candlelight’ concerts at the Newbridge Silverware venue last week (19-20 November) were both a sell-out affair, with a capacity for 240 guests on each of the nights in question.

“It starts with a mulled wine reception, followed by the Newbridge Gospel Choir first, then a four-course meal, then Michael English and his band from 8.30 to 10.30,” explained Tourism Manager Ronan Mackey.

“These are an annual event and we try to get them done in late November, or early December.

“Coming up is Abba by Candlelight (13 December]) and that’s already sold out.

“I think it was Christchurch Cathedral in Dublin started doing candlelight events a couple of years ago, and it really caught on nationwide.

“We’ve been doing it for three years now, with different act every year.

“I think we’re going to stick with the midweek event. You get a different type of clientele then, and yet we can still sell out nearly 500 tickets over two nights!” he said.

Night of entertainment

Tickets are €79 per person, regardless of whose playing.

“Of course, it’s great value,” said Ronan.

“It’s a four-hour night, seeing as you arrive for the mulled wine at 6.30pm and the show goes on until 10.30pm.

“If you went anywhere else you’d pay €79 for dinner and a glass of wine, never mind the event,” he said.
