OUR cat section volunteers are currently reminding everyone of the importance of neutering/spaying their pet cats to prevent another deluge this year of unwanted kittens.

However, it’s not so easy to prevent these unwanted kittens in the feral colony world. Would you believe that in the space of just 18 months, a kitten can become a mother, grandmother and a great-grandmother! That’s an awful lot of unwanted cats.

Our wonderful trap, neuter and release team work tirelessly to try to prevent this out-of-control breeding.

In the past month of January, the team managed with the great support of our local vets to process 35 of these feral cats.

If you do the maths, this has now prevented hundreds of feral kittens from coming into the world.

This is a great start to 2026, and we know the team will repeat these figures month on month.

Our cat section has also found forever homes for 32 cats and kittens who have all been neutered/spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Most of these kittens were looked after by foster families to whom we are indebted.

We are currently in need of soft fleecy blankets for our incoming cats/kittens and would welcome them being left outside our Shelter Gate tied up in a plastic sack and labelled cat section.

They can also be handed in to our shop, Noah’s Ark, on Cutlery Road, Newbridge. Thank you to the first-year students at St Mary’s College, Naas who recently organised a fundraiser for our charity and presented to us with a very welcome cheque for €600.

Thank you also to the various donors who have recently brought us dog and cat food and equipment.

These are always in need, and this thoughtfulness is very much appreciated.

This week we feature the lovely Nina who is a very special and incredibly resilient girl having fully recovered from a leg amputation and is now bouncing around on three legs.

Not only bouncing, but Nina is also still able to do her zoomies in the garden! She is a one-year-old lurcher who is currently enjoying life in her foster home where she has been toilet-trained and has been taught some commands and how to play fetch.

Nina gets along great with other dogs, is gentle with children and loves to socialise. We would like her forever home to have a safe garden for her morning zoomies and a cosy sunspot for the rest of her day.

Nina’s Fosterer considers her to be a great companion and thinks she will be a super addition to any family. Her details and photographs can be found on our website www.kwwspca.ie.
